Usually, the capital of the country is also the country's largest city but this is not always the case. Another feature is usually the somewhat central location in the country (for example Madrid - Spain, Rome - Italy).
Also capital cities are often located on the coast (Lisbon - Portugal Stockholm - Sweden) or at a large river (Danube - Vienna - Austria). Madrid is the highest capital city in Europe (667 meters above sea level).
Not all capitals have historically been the most important cities in the history in a certain area (eg Madrid).
